Our Mission

The H²EG Members will support and promote
  • Support and strive to achieve the climate targets of the Paris Agreement as well as the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

  • Promote NATURAL (NATIVE) and GREEN HYDROGEN as a clean, renewable and sustainable energy carrier and feedstock to achieve the transition to net zero emission societies.

  • Recognize that hydrogen can be produced in many ways and that there are different carbon free/neutral hydrogen production pathways in order to enable a zero-emission society.

  • Cooperate in the transition of energy generation, transportation, consumption and sector coupling to hydrogen, fuel cell and related technologies as well as the promotion of a strong Egyptian hydrogen industry incorporating these systems and technologies.

  • Promote fair business practice and provide the necessary support to facilitate the establishment of Egyptian hydrogen value chains.

Hydrogen Egypt (/H²EG) - Background

Renewable hydrogen economies could address many of the economic and environmental challenges Egypt faces. Producing, exporting and consuming clean, renewable and sustainable Green Hydrogen would avoid imports of fossil-based fuels and chemicals. This would reduce dependency on foreign currencies and help improve trade balances. The savings from this and from reducing pollution (negative externalities), as well as socio-economic benefits, could fund new hydrogen programs. Partnerships between industry, the financial sector, science institutions, the public sector and governments as well as large end consumers of green hydrogen could make these hydrogen economies happen rapidly. Hydrogen technology is ready for use and available now! New markets for it are growing rapidly and offer a great range of environmentally-friendly business opportunities. Hydrogen technology can unlock the large amount of untapped renewable energy in Egypt. Large scale storage and flexible transmission of renewable energy would achieve green electrification of Egypt. Using hydrogen as an energy carrier, large scale renewable energy farms as well as mini-grid solutions could become commercially viable.  Hydrogen has a high energy density (compressed at 700 bar) so it is the only environmentally friendly alternative fuel for rail and automotive use. It could fuel vehicles carrying heavy loads and long-haul transport in trucks and buses. It could also power the millions of lightweight utility vehicles that Northern and sub-Saharan societies depend on. There’s a secondary application of renewable hydrogen after the power and transport sectors. It serves the chemical industry (such as for making fertilizer), the steel industry (used as a reduction agent) and as a reliable fuel for high temperature industrial processes. Egypt’s ideal environment for developing the first hydrogen economies from scratch. That’s because the flexibility of hydrogen is highly valued and its understood that it is the most versatile energy carrier and could be the crucial missing link in transition to green energy.

Hydrogen Egypt (H²EG) – EU Context

Decarbonisation of the global economy is one of the fundamental challenges of the 21st century. The reduction of GHG emissions is critical to mitigating global warming and its effects on human societies and ecosystems, as acknowledged by the COP 21 Paris Agreement signed in 2015.  Hydrogen technologies provide a mature and competitive zero-emission solution for a growing number of applications, produced with renewable energy sources. By providing means of storage, hydrogen can provide a buffer for the energy system as well as decarbonise heavy duty transport (by land, sea and air) or energy intensive industries like steel, refining or cement for instance. In recent years, the EU adopted the European Green Deal, the European Hydrogen Strategy, and the fit for 55 package amongst others. Within those policies, hydrogen is identified as one of the key technologies to achieve decarbonisation but also European energy security as part of the RePowerEU plan. In parallel, many countries around the world have recognized the role of hydrogen in decarbonizing the global economy through the adoption of various hydrogen policies and initiatives, R&D roadmaps and market development strategies.  This is the case for the Egyptian government and business community, who widely recognize the role of hydrogen for the decarbonisation of the Egyptian economy, especially for energy intensive industries and heavy-duty transport. Indeed, Egypt recently allocated areas for green hydrogen production in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone). In addition, a number of MoU have notably been signed with International consortiums. Egypt and the International community need to collaborate to support the deployment of those technologies domestically as well as develop robust trading routes for hydrogen and its derivatives; thus, mutually contributing to global decarbonisation efforts as well as creating jobs and growth on both continents for years to come. The H2EG Charter expresses the most fundamental guiding principles. The purpose of the Charter aims at aligning the expectations of all H2EG Members as well as all organizations and stakeholders interested in or cooperating with the H2EG. The main OBJECTIVE of H2EG is to promote, support and accelerate the deployment of GREEN and NATURAL (NATIVE) HYDROGEN technology as well as to improve access to (clean) energy and mobility by aligning the industry, renewable industry and financial industry community and hereby increasing the effectiveness of the representation of this community. The Association will enable member companies to exchange views and ideas on economic, technical and other relevant social topics, including the treatment of political, legal and tax issues on an International, Mediterranean, and pan-African basis. It will enable them to communicate with the public, governments and administrative bodies with one voice. Within this context, the H2EG is to position itself as the main association in Egypt, directly representing key industry leaders, SMEs, national and regional associations in the field of hydrogen and fuel cell technology and providing them with an expert platform. The H2EG’s objectives further include development and strengthening of advocacy and visibility by disseminating information and educating policy-makers, thereby generating support and positioning itself (the H2EG) as the key catalyst and coordinator for achieving synergies with other policies, schemes and activities in Egypt. 1. Non-binding target of 10 million tonnes of EU domestic hydrogen production and 10 million tonnes of imported renewable hydrogen by 2030 as part of the RePowerEU plan. Egypt Hydrogen Association are  based not for profit organizations under establishment. We do not represent, endorse any specific commercial hydrogen product, organization or company.
